Many New Faces, Lots of Dreads!

I’ve had two very busy weeks at Grateful Dreads.  I did a lot of dreads maintenance and some color and cuts too.  So many people are finding the salon lately which is exciting!  The salon is really producing some beautiful hair on all different hair types!  Again I didn’t get pictures of everyone, and there was some very beautiful color that I didn’t snap up, but there are plenty of great pics here to cap off the week!

Karen is so cool!  She came in with her ends burned off from bleach, so we did some color and intense repair treatments.  It’s only been a couple weeks, and you wouldn’t believe how good her hair looks!  We put color on it a second time, and it’s really staying and looks very natural and soft.  Her hair grows fast too!

Karen brought in her locked friend Tony for some tightening.

Ciarra came in for just a trim on her ends. I did some light shaping and left her hair as long as possible. We did some deep conditioners and a color mousse to richen what she already had.

Ciarra is the director of the Noir fashion group at U of M. She keeps busy between school and coordinating fashion!

This is what fabulous looks like!

I set her hair using Original Moxie Shape Shifter and Hair Bling then Ciarra sat under the dryer. We pulled the curls out to make it bouncy and big!

She pulled her hair up herself. I love the tousely look, and I totally love this 90’s retro sweater with her curls!

Thank you so much to everyone who came in this week and to all of you who have referred these nice people to the salon.  I’m really loving it!

Grateful Dreads at Kindlefest 2012

Kindlefest is an annual event for Kerrytown.  We all set up booths in the Farmers’ Market area, and people came from all over to celebrte the start of the holiday season.  There were lots of vendors with hand made goods and yummy food and drnks fotr everyone.  The fire pit and roasted chestnuts smelled really nice, and there were horns playing Christmas music.  There were so many shoppers!!

Greg, Camellia, and I were at the booth talking to people about Grateful Dreads.

Many Visitors at Grateful Dreads!

This was a fun week at the salon. There’s a lot of great hair happening here! It’s funny how some of the people I see regularly, I still have not snapped a picture!

Kindlefest was this weekend, and the salon has been busier than ever! I’ve had a lot of long-time clients and many new faces come through. Here are the pics!!

I put up some lights for the holidays. I love how the salon looks after a job well done!

The holiday season is here!!  Kerrytown is bursting with activities!  The trees all have lights and there is Christmas music playing at the Kerrytown Concert House.  The Farmers’ Market is full of wreaths and trees and shoppers!  It’s so special to see all the families and to be there with my own family especially during this time!

Cam and Gabi

Fan Cam and Gabi met at Grateful Dreads for quick Kerrytown photoshoot!  Fan Cam is an extremely motivated and talented model.  Gabi is a talented photographer as well as a gorgeous model!  I knew they would really get along, so I was so happy to host this shoot.  I love getting artists together for collaborations!  We all had fun and got some great photos!!

I had already cut their hair, so I left things pretty natural.  I styled Cam’s a little bit, and Gabi did some very light make up.

Thank you Gabi, and thank you Cam!  You are both so talented and fun, and you both have amazing style!  I think we all enjoyed ourselves.  Special thank you to the person who loaned us this great camera!

Dreads Session Pics

Gabi Giacchieri came to the salon to take some photos of Cam and got these of me working on Anthony’s hair.  Thank you Gabi!!!

A great pic of the salon!

And Bron
I like this one!

Many New Clients! Lots of Hair Textures! Lots of Families!!

Macenzie came in looking really cute with a straightened, assymetrical cut. Very stylish but a little fuzzy at the ends. We all agreed the cut was cute, and since she wants her hair long, we would do a cute style and let her hair grow!!

I gave Macenzie’s hair some deep conditioning.
Finished look!

I left Macenzie’s natural curl on the sides and in back then added some curls with a small curling iron to the top. Kind of a pompadour look! Annette came in wanting a different look. We decided to push her hair forward instead of back, and I cut in a cute cut with bangs while accenting her natural hair growth especially in the back. Mama and daughter, so cute!!

Look at that beautiful natural curl!! I like the change in texture on top. It’s very styley!
Bron using the Kevin Murphy Color Bug. These really look great in her hair! And the color has already lasted a few days!
Nolam’s new do!
Linda grew out her hair for about two years! This was her first cut. We deep conditioned and gave her some fun movement! Linda does the graphic design for Grateful Dreads!
Anthony and Annelle with the new dreadlocks!

Anthony and Annelle are two really amazing people!  They drove here from Oklahoma, and I am so glad to have met them!!  Anthony is part of a youth ministry where he lives.  The whole family is so stylish you wouldn’t believe it!

I rounded the tips of Anthony’s dreads.  It’s the look he wanted, and his hair texture and condition were just right to do this.

My sister and her family are in town for Thanksgiving! They stopped by Grateful Dreads, and I gave all the girls colored extensions! Camellia has the pink Color Bug in her hair 🙂

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

An Evening at Start Gallery

I went to Start Gallery to cut and color some hair. We set up right in the gallery with the art. The current exhibit is called Vessels and features work by 10 artists. The opening party the night before was a huge success! I walked around with Jason to view the all the art and took some great pictures!

View out the window of Grand River and Broadway.
Bright art! The geometrical one on the top in the middle is drawn with markers!
Very drippy!

Beautiful Celtic ladies. Flowy hair and dresses!
Pottery
Raku. I could smell the fire when I was near them!
I love paintings of ships!
Twilight in Detroit.

Creepy! This is part of an amazing and eerie collection.

These paintings are all done by different artists and collectively picture a serpent.

Ceramic barnacles and other underwater things.

Look at this little guy. Casey he has your wishbone!
More Raku with very shiny shimmery paint!
Octopus pirate girl
The entire North wall is lined with these windows which makes for a great view.

This seems like it’s from the past!

I love these honeycombs! Most of the artists all did a honeycomb piece without previously discussing the idea.
The biggest hair pile ever. Every time!!
I love working in art galleries!

Start Gallery is on East Grand River in downtown Detroit. I love this gallery for the art and the location. Start has been open and running for a year and a half and has already featured over a hundred amazing artists! The current exhibit, Vessels, houses so many different types of art. I really enjoyed my private showing. Such fun. I took a lot of pictures but could have taken a lot more. They’ve really loaded the gallery with art!! The gallery itself and its surroundings are even art. Vessels runs for about 2 more weeks.

Start Gallery and Grateful Dreads have formed an event called H’art. It’s hair and art together. I’ll be in the gallery giving haircuts the second Sunday of every month from 4pm until 8pm. There will be beer and wine served, and the gallery will be open for viewing. What a classy and cool event! I would love to see you there!

Things are going smoothly at Grateful Dreads

A lot of regular clients and some new ones came for appointments this week!  When I’m busy like this I don’t get as many pictures!!  Here are a few good ones though.

Stu’s low gradual fade

Happy Birthday Stu!

Ebonie’s newly tightened locks. We put extensions on some of them for length, fullness, and color.
I like taking pictures of the work station!

You can see the tools I used to work on Ebonies hair, and you can sort of see the hair in the mirror.  It’s important to only use 100% human hair when adding extensions to locs.  I used the Jane Carter Solution Twist and Lock on Ebonie’s ends.  I used Original Moxie Emollience for her scalp which is full of yummy butters and oils!

Extensions clients have long appointments, so I took some pretty pictures of the hair beforehand!

Beautiful blonde SoCap extensions!
Wavy SoCaps!

p.s.  Grateful Dreads awning is getting closer!!  I think it will be up in a week!

Lots of Hair!

Grateful Dreads is feeling the love! Lots and lots of hair came through the salon this week! I just got a few picks. There were a few hairstyles I would have loved to post on here, but the rhythm was so smooth I forgot to snap them! It’s a busy time of year for everyone! School, interviews, work, and parties!

Wai Wah is really cool.  Look at his style!
Rachel came in for a cut and style.
I love her scarf!
I couldn’t stop snapping pictures of Rachel’s beautiful hair!!
Adam came in with a few dreads in the back, and I put them in all over his head! We listened to a lot of techno which made for a fun dreads session!
Candy Bracelets.
Look at all those tiny dreads! This took me seven hours.

Linda and I have been working diligently on the new cards and the sign design.  They’re almost ready to be printed, and I’m so happy about that!  Keep a look out for them.  They’ll be here soon!

Dreads Repair Before and After

Breanne came into Grateful Dreads for some maintenance and repair.  She started her dreadlocks almost a month ago, and they were all growing together into one big mass of hair.  I separated them and tightened them up!

This was about an hour into it.
Finished look. I love that Brea’s hair is loose in the front!
These are some nice looking dreadlocks!

What a difference!  So happy to have met you Breanne!  Best wishes to you with your move, and please stop in for a visit when you come back to town!

A lot of people put in dreads / locs, and as the hair settles in, they’re not sure how to care for the new style.  I meet a lot of people this way!  If you’re having issues with your dreads / locs, please call or come in the salon.  Don’t panic!  And don’t wait too long!  I haven’t met a dread yet that was beyond repair 🙂

Grateful Dreads’ First Client is Looking Good!

Kevin was the first client at Grateful Dreads!  These pictures show the progress of his dreads.

Dreadlocks after three days.
Five weeks later.
Almost four months, and the dreads look great!

Look at these dreadlocks!  Kevin thank you so much for coming in.  I really enjoy the conversation and being a part of this progress.

Lots Going on at Grateful Dreads!

I’ve had a very busy week with clients and with the community!

Lane drove from Alpena for some dreads work.  Lane is a hairdresser and has a small shop where she lives.  What an honor to work on another hairdresser’s hair!  She’s got great style too.  Her hair is amazing!

Lane came in with half her hair dreaded.
I dreaded her other half! I love purple dreads!!
Lane and Bob Marley. Full heads of dreads!

Bron and I twisted up her hair into a cute side-part style.  I’ll do a later post of her hair taken out of the twists.

Prep Core!

Grateful Dreads has an ad in Community High School’s student run paper The Communicator!

Thank you Linda for designing this beautiful ad!

Grateful Dreads Has an Assistant!

Meet Bronwen Gayles!

She’s in town for a few months, and she makes these:

Bron will be with me at Grateful Dreads until the end of December.  She’s really fun, and we’re excited to share our trade! Bronwen is an expert with natural, kinky styles as well. A Luxurious Monday

Gabi, Suki, Mai, and I met for our first photo session as a team!  What a great day!  Beautiful weather, luxurious clothes, and a modern, artistic setting.  We all worked very hard and had much success!

Stephanie (Suki’s mom) and Gabi took some behind-the-scenes photos with Suki’s iPad:

Plastik Kuties!

I’m so excited by this shoot.  We all left feeling good, and we’re all still going with this great energy.  I’m happy with how my skills and confidence have grown.  Creativity was flowing through all of us.  We worked hard and captured everything I had imagined!  Thank you so much to everyone involved in this shoot!  Gabi, Suki, Stephanie, Mai, Fotoula, and to my dear friends for letting us use this location.  Thank you so much!!

Mai’s high-quality photos will be ready in the near-future.  These are just some snap shots for a sneak of the session!!
