Saturday Morning Farmers’ Market

Farmers’ Market is across the street from Grateful Dreads.  I walked through on my way to pick up my special order of triple tea tree shampoo for cleaning dreadlocks.  Yay!!  Here are some of the highlights!

Giant Heirloom Tomatos

Seeley Farm Seasonal Greens

WATERMELONS!!!!!
Tasty Bakery
gluten free and vegan yummy desserts!
It’s important that anyone with EBT know about this. You get double your food money when you shop at most farmers’ markets. Eat fresh!
The Kerrytown Concert House is getting a makeover!
I found this flower by the mailbox.
The Espresso Bar hosted the Batata Shop for a pop-up! I went right inside to say hi to Tawnya! She’s really cool and makes very yummy sweet potato goodness. She really radiates a bright light.

So good to see you Tawnya!  Next time you’ll have to come by the salon for some relaxation and yumminess for your hair!

Curly Hair, Before and After

Monique came into the salon on her way to a lunch with friends.  I nourished her hair with some deep conditioners and yummy hair products, all by Original Moxie.  Then I twisted her hair into a cute set!

And after!

Thank you Monique!  So good to see you again!

Original Moxie Products

Original Moxie products are made locally in Ypsilanti by someone with curly hair for people with curly hair.  The products are all natural and organic when possible.  They’re made of herbs and flowers and natural butters.  They smell so yummy you could eat them!  This is one of the best product lines I’ve ever used;  I am so happy to have this in the salon!

The Gardens Outside are Really Flourishing!

Some new pics of Grateful Dreads’ surroundings:

A fairie’s view of the mailbox!

A very special pic of a hidden flower.

Lavender

These look like snowflakes!
Grateful Dreads is in the old Burkhart Building. Maybe someday this sign will say Grateful Dreads!

Such a beautiful place!  I am so happy here!

Knotty Boy is in the House!!

The Knotty Boy products arrived a couple days ago!

Bob Marley watches over Grateful Dreads.
I really love these bar soaps. They make the whole shop smell yummy!
Tightening gel, conditioning sprays for mature dreads, freshening sprays, and a cooling spray. The one on the right is a pre-dreading soap and also removes wax.
The beads are here too!  Made locally by the lovely Rebecca Ariel-Michelle

Knotty Boy products are all natural, organic, earth-friendly, and cruelty-free.  They smell amazing, and they WORK!

Nicole’s Ombré

This is a pic I found that was just taken of my friend Nicole Ciccarelli.  She lives in Chicago where she is a writer, a model, and an advocate for holistic wellness.  Nicole came to visit me last week, and I gave her some double ombré!!

This photo was taken by Usuf Khan in Chicago.  I like the simplicity of this photo and how he used the light.  The colors are just right too!  And I’m really into top-knots as a hairstyle right now!!

Maeve, Daighna, and I

Måeve, Daighna, and I got together on Sunday and had the first ever photo shoot at Grateful Dreads!  We got very creative, worked hard, and had a lot of fun.  I love that I get to spend time making art with such wonderful people and am so thankful!  The pics below were all taken with my iphone.  The real pics were shot by Daighna Rayner and are currently being looked through and edited by her.

Here’s a sneak of our last look.  Måeve in a beautiful grassy meadow.  She’s wearing the wrap dress designed by Fotoula Lambros for Fotoula Lambros Design.  This dress was the closing look in FLD’s most recent Detroit fashion show but in white.  She graciously loaned us the black one for this shoot.

Look at those clouds!

The rest of these photos are of the salon after the shoot.  I really love my new salon!  And I really loved this shoot.  Everything about it.

Most of those clothes are by designer Kelly Lynne. She and I pulled from her newest collection which was totally fun!

A very special day

Thanks to everyone involved!

Paige Glamour

Here are two good shots from a recent photoshoot with Paige Mobley.  Marygrace D’Aleo did her make-up and brought the red dress.  I styled Paige’s hair off her face and neatly to the side for the beauty shot, shown first.  For the last look of the shoot we got very glamorous with a roller set, and I pinned her hair into a bob.  Paige is an excellent model and really worked the look!

I am so happy to have worked with the photographer, Acacia.  Watching her work was energizing, and her edited pic below is a piece of fine art.  What a pleasure to work with such an amazing and talented artist!

The faux bob!  Very glamorous!!

FLD Fashion Show, Detroit

I went to Fotoula Lambros’ fashion show this past Saturday at Exodus in Greektown.  When I arrived, the buzz backstage was very positive.  The models all looked great and ready to go.  Laura Rose was in the middle of them all checking over their hair and doing some last minute primping.  I grabbed a cocktail and found a great spot to watch the show near Laur Nash, the event’s photographer.

I was really impressed with the visuals for this show.  There were three screens adjacent, one with footage of a girl swimming in a beautiful gown–she looked like she was falling on purpose!  The entire patio of Exodus was painted white which really added to the New York City effect of the show.  I’m excited to see the beginnings of a true fashion scene in Detroit.  There were some very sharp outfits in attendance!

The fashion show begins!

I got one good shot with my iPod.

The rest of these photos were taken by Laur Nash:

Fotoula dyed this fabric herself!

Beautiful dress!

F A S H I O N !!!!!!!!

Fotoula looked boss!  I really love the lion pendant she’s wearing.

Laura Rose, Fotoula’s lead hair-stylist, gave her a cute little cake and a huge smile!  Happy Birthday Fotoula!

Here’s a pic of me outside the show in Greektown!

You can see more of Fotoula and her fashions, Laura Rose, and Laur Nash at Workroom Detroit.

Big Ones!

These dreads are huge!  They will matt down over time and become solid.  They’re so fluffly when they’re fresh!

Rodney’s headband is perfect for his dreads!

Look at that huge one on the bottom ^

Look at those huge dreads!

Rodney’s hair is going to take some daily maintenance to get his dreads where he wants them.  Keep them separated and twist the ends.  Wrapping them at night will help a lot.  I do not recommend palm-rolling these locks.  It would disorganize the rope pattern.

Josh’s Dreads After 10 Weeks

Forming nicely!

Tight rubberbands can cause kinks in the dreads.  If you use a rubberband, don’t put it too tight, and try to put your ponytail in a different spot each time.

Summertime!

Wow Josh’s hair gets really blonde in summer!  These dreads are looking great!  Josh works on them a lot, and it shows.  Here’s a pic from when they were first done:

Thanks for the pics Josh!   See you soon!

Coming Soon!

Dear all.  Grateful Dreads is coming into existence!  I will update this page as new things happen.  I am currently in the process of signing the lease for the space and getting my keys.  Next I’ll build this salon from scratch.  It will take a little while but not too long.  You’re very welcome to come by for a visit.  I currently do not have a phone set up.  I’m waiting for paperwork and will have these things soon!!  For now I’ve listed my cell.

Anyone with dreads or any cool hair that I’ve done, and anyone who would like your hair done for some pictures on my blog, please contact me.   Thanks!!!
