Jessie’s Dreads, T Bird, and Rainbow Hair!!

I put in Jessie’s dreads for her recently.  They look so cute!  When I first saw Jessie, her hair already looked like it was in dreads!  She was READY!

Jessie’s new dreads are really cute!
We pinned up her dreads, so they would look cute without creating kinks. It’s best to avoid ever pinching your dreads especially when they’re new. That causes them to bend.

Teymour came by for an early morning appt.  I’ve been cutting his hair for around 10 years now.  Time really does fly!

Teymour and Camellia hanging out

I’m always messing around with extensions and color.  This is my latest creation.

Rainbow Hair!!

Look for these in future photoshoots!

Maeve

Maeve is royalty of models.  I love working with her and her hair!  She’s so gorgeous, highly educated, and speaks from her amazing experiences.  So cool!  We met early for the shoot and got ready so fast that we went out for breakfast while we waited for Daighna Rayner, the photographer, to arrive.  The day before, Maeve came to Grateful Dreads, and I deep conditioned her hair and braided it to dry.  When I took out her braid for the shoot, her hair looked beautiful just how it was!  I did a little detail work to create some smoothness.  Maeve did all of her make up in all of the photos.

This is a very special shoot.  I put a lot of myself and my ideas into this and was able to meet with both of my favorite designers, Kelly Lynne and Fotoula Lambros, to pull from their new collections.  Given the concept and the model, we were all excited!

All photos by Daighna Rayner for Daighna Photography:

The dress in the last picture is the Monroe dress in black by Fotoula Lambros for Fotoula Lambros Design.  The dresses in the above pictures are both by Kelly Sager for Kelly Lynne.  The machine in the top picture is a Linotype and is how newspapers used to be printed.  Maeve looks like she is from that era in Kelly Lynne’s beautiful lacy dress!  I really love the red puffy sleaves on the middle dress.  So haute couture!

Maeve has amazing energy.  Thank you to all of you involved in this shoot!

Another Fun and Busy Week at Grateful Dreads!

The seasons are changing.  The students are coming back, and a lot of people are coming home from abroad.  Back to work!

Here are some highlights of the happenings this week:

Dafna is back from Jerusalem and came in for a haircut.
When clients find me at the new shop, it feels like a reunion!
Rodney’s dreads are tightening! He came in for a “tune-up.” Look how smooth they are!
We put in Rodney’s dreads two months ago.
Casey came by, and we fixed up her hair real quick!
Kelly’s new ombré! We totally updated her look! Camellia really loves Kelly:)
Laura drove from Toledo to have her dreads fixed up! She is one of those amazing people I love to meet! Thank you!!
Mums from the Farmers’ Market
I like the colors of the pear tree with the hanging plant.
The sign picked up a sticker! I love it!!

There’s so much going on at and around Grateful Dreads!

Stardust

The photos from Grateful Dreads’ first photoshoot are here!  Ashley is so gorgeous!  I really love her style. We met up early that morning, so I could make her hair platinum and touch up her mohawk before the shoot (you can view the process in the next post).  Then I made her hair huge and added some bright purple and deep blue to the back!  Ashley did her own make up then we drove out to a beautiful spot on the river.

All photos by Amy Hubbarth:

I love Ashley’s confidence!  And I really love the one-lens sunglasses!  What a special treat to work with these two amazing artists.  Thank you I love you guys!!

Platinum Mohawk Session

Amy Hubbarth took some cool pictures while I worked on Ashley’s hair.  They drove from Detroit for Grateful Dreads’ first photo session!

Finished Look!  This is what platinum looks like!!

We liked Ashley’s roots, so I used foils to apply the bleach.  After a double process bleach, we then applied a toner by Goldwell.  I dried her hair and made it big and billowy and then touched up her sides with Oster 76 clippers, faded her nape, and lined her up!

Special thanks to Denise the barber for teaching me all about clippers.  Denise owns and operates Goodfellows Barbershop in Royal Oak.

Tasha

Tasha shines a bright light.  She just graduated from U of M and makes jewelry.  She’s got dreads, some old and some new, and she was Camellia’s nanny.  Now she’s on her way to Miami!

A rare hair-down pic!
The kids love Tasha! Camellia has on the backpack.

We’ll miss you Tasha!!!!!

Summertime at Grateful Dreads

I am so thankful to have started something that people love!  Grateful Dreads gets busier every week, and that is thanks to all of you.  Thank you!

Here are a few pics of what I did this week:

Ashley came in to get her dreads freshened up! Look at the pretty yarn in her hair!
Ashley’s baby likes to pull on her dreads which caused a lot of loose hairs. We got those all worked back into her dreads!
Stu is my newest regular!  I’ll fade you!!
Ben: Before
And after!
Ben is a jazz drummer.
Jeremy’s hair felt a little dry, so I nourished his hair with some Original Moxie products. We got all the loose hairs tied in, and I put some Emollience salve on his ends.
Dreads!

Jeremy Porter does Quantum Touch Massage and is an Orgonite vendor.  His studio will be open in the next month!  I’ll post links.  He is amazing!

Jen’s curly hair!
So beautiful and on her way for the big presentation!
Erin and Nick visited from Seattle!
Erin and Greg are OGs
I’ve been studying for my audition in my downtime.

Summer has reached it’s peak, and fall is in the air.
